Malawi Police Service has urged people in Mzimba District to seek help whenever they face emotional or personal challenges instead of resorting to suicide, saying taking one’s own life is never a solution to problems.
The appeal was made on Friday during a community awareness campaign conducted in Engalaweni, Manyamula and Nchelera as part of efforts to curb rising cases of suicide, mob justice, murder and violence against elderly people.
Director of Community Policing and Police Unit, Alexander Ngwala, said the campaign seeks to strengthen collaboration between the police, traditional leaders and communities in preventing crime and protecting vulnerable groups.
Ngwala said police are engaging people in trading centres, villages and at the ongoing Umthetho Cultural Festival to encourage peaceful conflict resolution, respect for human life and timely reporting of crimes to law enforcement agencies.
A resident of Engalaweni, Amos Phakati, described the campaign as timely, saying it had helped community members understand the importance of resolving disputes peacefully and supporting people experiencing emotional distress.
