Police in Neno District are urging the public not to resort to suicide when faced with challenges but to, instead, seek counselling services from relevant offices, such as the Police Victim Support Unit, Social Welfare Office, the church and other organisations.

The appeal comes following the tragic death of a businessman in the district, 36-year-old
Edward Kamalata, who was found hanging in a mango tree.

According to Rebecca Msoliza, the spokesperson for Neno Police, Kamalata had left his father’s house on April 3, 2024 for work and briefly returned after knocking off. He then went out on a drinking spree after dinner and returned home in an intoxicated state.

At around 2 am, Kamalata’s father went outside to relieve himself and was shocked to discover his son’s lifeless body hanging from the mango tree.

He immediately alerted Zalewa Police Unit and the body was taken to Lisungwi Community Hospital.

A postmortem revealed that death was due to suffocation secondary to strangulation.

Edward Kamalata, the deceased, hailed from Zalewa Village,Traditional Authority Symon in Neno District.
