Participants of the Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme (CSEPWP) in Mchinji District have lauded the government for timely wages, saying it is crucial support during the lean period.
The participants, who were involved in a range of environmental protection interventions, expressed relief and gratitude that they are now receiving their wages.
Charity Patulani, a mother of three said in an interview at Gumba Catchment after getting her wages that the payment will help her secure food supplies in this time of food scarcity.
Another programme participant from the same catchment, Thom Matias, said he was also happy for the money he had received, as his family was grappling with hunger.
Matias said he did not harvest enough last season so the money will be used to buy food for his family of four.
Pay parade for participants in the third cycle of implementation of the programme has started on a good note in Mchinji with participants in three catchments of Gumba, Wifi, and Guillime so far getting their wages.
According to the CSEPWP desk officer Rhoda Njikho, the pay parade is going on smoothly with some glitches that were observed rectified.
After working for 24 days in subprojects that help correct their communities’ environments, the participants receive K38,400.
