Mumba pledges volunteers’ labour policies reformation

Minister of Labour, Vitumbiko Mumba, says the government is reviewing labour policies and regulations to ensure they address challenges volunteers are facing in line of their duty.

The minister said this in Lilongwe during International Volunteerism Commemoration at Airwing Primary School ground in Lilongwe.

Mumba said the ministry will ensure it bridges existing gaps in labour laws to ensure there are improved standards and that volunteers execute their work without challenges such as intimidation.

Executive Director for National Youth Council (NYCOM), Rex Chapota, said over 80 percent of people involved in volunteerism are youths.

Chapota said NYCOM has put in place safeguarding measures to ensure youths are not abused or exploited.

Meanwhile, a representative of local volunteers in the country, Gomezgani Nkhoma, has called for increased awareness on volunteerism and support to volunteers for their improved livelihood .

International Volunteers Day is commemorated on 5th December annually. In Malawi the celebrations were under the theme “Volunteer Actions Towards a Sustainable and Inclusive Future”.
