Ministry of Lands and Housing has completed the construction of 49 out of 67 houses for people with albinism across the country.
Deus Gumba, the Minister of Lands and Housing made the disclosure while handing over a house to a family with two children with albinism in the area of Traditional Authority Mzikubola in Mzimba.
Following a series of attacks on people with albinism in past years, the government directed the Ministry of Lands and Housing to start constructing strong and secure houses for their protection.
Handing over the house to the Mwale family, Gumba said Capital Hill will continue with the project to offer maximum security to people with albinism in the country.
“We will continue with another 15 houses for people with albinism this year,” he said.
Receiving the house on behalf of the beneficiary, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Gender, Nertha Mgala, urged individuals and organisations to join the government in protecting people with albinism, stressing that they did not choose to be born with the condition and have equal rights.
During the handover ceremony, M’mbelwa District Council promised to sink a borehole and construct a junior primary school in the area as a way of providing further security to the children with albinism.
