The Department of Water Resources which is within the Ministry of Water and Sanitation says the Southern Region is at a risk of floods due to anticipated high water levels in numerous rivers from 10 March to 15 March, 2024.
James Chitete, Director of Water Resources, has since urged the public to exercise caution, advising against settlement near and crossing of flooded rivers and streams.
Chitete, in a statement, emphasized the importance of utilizing Community Based Flood Early Warning Systems (CBFEWS) to mitigate the risk of loss of life caused by floods.
He identified several rivers at risk of flooding, including Likangala, Thondwe, Namadzi, Phalombe, Naphende, Sombani, Shire, Ruo, Thuchila, Domasi, Wankulumadzi, Rivi Rivi, Mwanza, Mkombezi, Namiyala, Thangadzi, Mapelera, Naperi, Likhubula, Linchenya, Kwakwasi, Nyankotola, Lirangwe, and Livuzi Rivers.
Earlier, Yobu Kachiwanda, spokesperson for the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services (MET), had announced that certain areas in the Southern Region would experience rainfall during the week.
