Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, says malaria remains a public health problem that is killing a lot of people in the country.
Chiponda made the remarks during the commemoration of World Malaria Day in the area of Traditional Authority Nthondo in Ntchisi district.
She said in 2023 alone, the country registered 6.4 million malaria cases and over 1,000 malaria deaths.
The minister further said government has developed a malaria strategic plan and other interventions to eliminate the disease by the year 2030.
She said among other interventions, government has procured 11.7 Million nets that will be distributed in all 28 districts as well as expand school malaria case management.
World Health Organization (WHO) National Professional Officer for Malaria, Micheal Kayange, has urged the government and development partners to strengthen the delivery of interventions to achieve optimal coverage.
World Malaria Day is observed annually on 25 April and this year’s theme is “Advancing health equity, gender equality, and human rights”.
