The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has challenged political parties and electoral stakeholders in Nkhata Bay to advocate for peaceful and fair general elections, which will take place on 16 September, 2025.
Speaking during a sensitization campaign on new electoral laws, elections calendar, new constituency and ward boundaries among others, MEC Commissioner Caroline Mfune said electoral stakeholders have a mandate to sensitize the general public on the changes and the need to follow electoral guidelines thereby avoiding irregularities.
“The commission will apply stiff punishment to those not adhering to electoral laws, including disqualification and fines of up to K10 million and those who will commit criminal laws during the process will be handed to Police and the law will take its course,” she continued.
Nkhata Bay District Director of Planning and Development, Edgar Chihana, appreciated MEC’s move, saying it gives enough time to the stakeholders to sensitize the public on the changes.
The meeting attracted Nkhata Bay Civil Society Organisations, District Elections Supervisory Team, Nkhata-Bay Multiparty Liaison Committee, representatives of registered political parties, traditional, faith and religious leaders as well as the media.
