Mandela Africa Leadership Summit set to open in Nairobi

The inaugural Mandela Africa Leadership Summit 2026 is set to convene in Nairobi from 5 February, bringing together leaders, innovators, creatives and youth from across Africa and its global diaspora to advance ethical and transformative leadership.

According to a media briefing issued by the Mandela Institute for Humanity, the summit is inspired by the enduring legacy of the late South African statesman Nelson Mandela and seeks to reposition leadership as a tool for service, collaboration and shared responsibility in a rapidly changing world.

“In a world often divided by conflict, inequality and environmental crisis, leadership is not just about power  it is about purpose,” reads the briefing, describing the summit as part of a growing global movement dedicated to people-centred and future-focused leadership.

The high-level Pan-African gathering will be anchored in the Ubuntu philosophy  “I am because we are” and is expected to provide a platform for dialogue, storytelling and collaboration around Africa’s most pressing leadership challenges and opportunities.

The summit will be headlined by Ndaba Thembekile Mandela, grandson of Nelson Mandela and Chairman of the Mandela Institute for Humanity. Organisers say his participation lends both global resonance and generational relevance to the event.

Ndaba Mandela is an author, entrepreneur and global advocate for youth leadership and social justice. He has previously served as the longest-serving Global Ambassador for UNAIDS and as Vice President of the Pan-African Youth Council. His involvement is expected to provide insights into contemporary Pan-African youth perspectives, global diplomacy and social impact leadership.

The summit will focus on five key thematic areas: education, innovation and digital transformation; diaspora and global collaboration; youth leadership development; gender equality and women’s leadership; and arts, culture and heritage as drivers of the creative economy.

Organisers note that the summit aligns closely with ongoing continental conversations around Africa’s demographic dividend, digital transformation, gender equity and the growth of creative economies. Nairobi has been identified as a strategic convening hub for launching what is envisioned as a long-term platform for Pan-African collaboration.

Media houses have been invited to participate through pre-event features, on-site coverage, exclusive interviews and opinion pieces aligned to the summit’s themes. The organisers describe the gathering as offering strong editorial value across politics, business, culture and youth development.

The Mandela Institute for Humanity, a non-profit organisation founded by Ndaba Mandela, says the summit represents a key moment in shaping Africa’s leadership narratives for local, regional and global audiences.
