Malawi, WFP sign maize import agreement

World Food Programme and the Malawi government have signed a 48,000 metric tonnes of maize import agreement valued at $35 million with funding from the World Bank Group.

Speaking in Lilongwe during a meeting to discuss the details of the agreement, Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba said this agreement signifies a significant step in complementing Malawi’s efforts in the provision of relief assistance to food-insecure households across the country.

He added that the gesture reflects the strong commitment of government and its partners in alleviating hunger and improving food security as per the calls by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera when he declared a state of disaster early last year.

WFP Regional Director for Southern Africa, Eric Perdison said this collaboration shows the strength of partnerships in tackling the challenges caused by climate-related crises.

World Bank Country Manager for Malawi, Firas Raad said the World Bank mobilised $50 million earlier this year to help Malawi address the impact of the recent El Nino-induced drought and is optimistic that this financing will provide greater food security to vulnerable households.

The government will distribute the food to approximately 954,000 households until the next harvest between April and July.
