Malawi to conduct trials on new TB vaccine

Malawi Liverpool Welcome Programme (MLW) is conducting a Tuberculosis (TB) vaccine trial to test its efficacy in preventing the disease in adults.

Senior Research Clinical Officer at MLW, Patrick Goodson, said the M72 TB vaccine is also being tested in South Africa, Zambia, Mozambique, Kenya, Indonesia and Vietnam.

“The Vaccine trial will establish how effective the vaccine is in preventing people from developing TB. This is important for Malawi as we still have high numbers of TB disease and its related deaths,” Goodson said.

The research will be conducted at two sites; Gateway MLW Clinic in Blantyre and UNC Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.

There are about 25, 000 TB cases in Malawi, according to researchers at MLW, with most of them being male adults.
