Malawi and Mozambique have agreed to strengthen their co-operation in various areas that can improve living conditions of people of the two countries.
Presidents Dr Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi and Daniel Chapo of Mozambique made the remarks at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe at the end of President Chapo’s two-day working visit to Malawi.
Dr Lazarus Chakwera said the visit accorded the two leaders an opportunity to discuss all areas affecting Malawi and Mozambique’s bilateral relationship and the progress the two countries are eager to continue making over the next five years to improve the living conditions of their people.
Dr Chakwera cited talks on facilitation of Malawi’s fuel products such as disel and petrol at the port of Beira, construction of a dry port in Nacala, which the government of Mozambique pledged provision of land, revival of rail transportation through the Sena corridor which previous administrations allowed to die, and the Malawi – Mozambique interconnection power line to link Malawi to the Southern Africa Power Pool, construction of One Go Border Post at various points of entry between Malawi and Mozambique, among many issues.
Most importantly, Dr Chakwera said the signing of several agreements crowned the visi, he described Mozambique as one of Malawi’s close development allies.
The Malawi leader also went on to commend people of Mozambique for demonstrating wisdom by electing President Daniel Chapo to continue progress left by his predecessor President Philip Nyusi.
Chapo thanked Dr Chakwera and people of Malawi for their hospitality and described the trip as very important for Malawi and Mozambique development.
On the forthcoming September elections, President Chapo asked Malawians to maintain peace and to vote for continued development.
The visit by President Daniel Chapo was part of commemorating 50 years of bilateral relationship between the two countries.
