Malawi’s Vice President, Dr Michael Bizwick Usi who is also Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, has delivered a speech at the African Consultation Meeting, underway in Tangier Morocco emphasising the importance of Africa’s role in global ocean conservation ahead of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference.
“Although Malawi is a landlinked country, we fully recognise the significance of the global ocean as an integral part of the planet’s ecological balance, economic prosperity, and climate resilience,” said Dr Usi.
The Vice President emphasised Malawi’s stewardship of Lake Malawi, one of the largest freshwater bodies in Africa, as a parallel to ocean governance.
“Lake Malawi provides livelihoods to millions through fishing, tourism, and transport. It supports incredible biodiversity, including species found nowhere else on earth,” said Dr Usi, affirming Malawi’s commitment to sustainable water management and regional cooperation to protect water ecosystems.
Dr Usi also pointed out Malawi’s efforts to improve water quality and management through various projects that strengthen climate resilience and empower local communities.
“We have prioritised sustainable fisheries management and biodiversity protection, and are working with regional bodies like SADC to promote cooperative approaches to water resource management,” said Dr Usi .
While acknowledging progress in achieving some targets under Sustainable Development Goal 14, the Vice President called for stronger international collaboration.
“Malawi, like many African countries, still lags in fully realising SDG 14. Strengthened cooperation and increased global support are crucial to ensuring the sustainable use of marine resources for future generations,” concluded Dr Usi.
The conference has a global representation including envoys of United Nations Secretary General.
