Kasiya Rutile, Graphite mining project promises long-term economic boost

Malawi’s mining sector is poised for a major shift with the development of the Kasiya Rutile and Graphite Project in Lilongwe, the world’s largest known natural rutile deposit.

In a statement, developers of the mining project, Sovereign Services Limited, through their Chief Executive Officer Frank Eagar, said the project has the potential to generate over 1,100 permanent jobs and inject billions of Kwacha into the Malawi economy.

“This project could position Malawi on the global titanium map, but success requires time, investment and responsible planning,” Eagar said.

He added that it will take up to six years for the mine to become fully operational and that currently, the company is finalising feasibility studies and engaging with communities and the government to meet environmental and regulatory requirements.

According to Eagar, they have already started community support initiatives, including a climate-smart farming programme, which has helped over 350 farmers boost crop yields by more than 400%.

“We’re not just here to mine—we’re here to improve lives,” he said.

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Industry, Trade and Tourism, Paul Nkhoma, expressed the government’s commitment to ensuring that the project is developed responsibly and sustainably.

With an investment of K2 trillion planned for infrastructure and operations, Kasiya could be one of Malawi’s largest-ever industrial ventures.
