Smallholder farmers in Lilongwe are boasting of bumper harvests following interventions by an international non-governmental organisation (NGO) called Kvuno in partnership with Solidaridad Southern Africa, who have been offering business solutions initiatives.
The farmers are from Nsaru in the area of Traditional Authority Kabudula in the district and the beneficiaries are over 500 farmers.
Virginia Frances is one of them and she states that they have been empowered to keep farm records, conduct farm mapping, access farm inputs, market and financial services and extension support, leading to improved productivity and high-income levels.
“For the past three years that I’ve participated in this programme, I have managed to construct a better house which I am planning to roof with iron sheets this year, I also managed to send my child to secondary school through farm proceeds,” said Frances.
This was revealed during a field visit by regional and Netherlands-based officials from the two NGOs.
Humphreys Nxumalo, the Regional Head of Programs at Solidaridad Southern Africa, said their visit is aimed at appreciating the organisation’s Pathways to Prosperity Programme implementation, connecting with local teams and identifying opportunities for synergy and partnership development.
