A campaign that seeks to garner support for Malawi to adopt The International Labour Organization’s ILO C 190 has been launched in Blantyre.
This is a guide for addressing issues of sexual harassment in the workplace and defending, protecting, and promoting workers’ rights.
Speaking during the launch, District Labour Officer Joseph Sambo said the government of Malawi is committed to seeing that the convention is ratified and necessary groundwork is done in consultation with ILO social constituents.
Sambo added that the instrument is going to decisively deal with violence and sexual harassment.
President of the Malawi Congress of Trade Union, Charles Kumchenga, acknowledged the importance of the campaign, which he said will fast-track the process of ratifying the instrument that also targets vulnerable groups such as domestic workers, women, and young girls at the workplace.
Countries that already ratified the ILO C 190 are South Africa, Mauritius, the Central African Republic, Nigeria, and Somalia.
