Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Chimwemwe Chipungu says the government will complete the construction of houses for staff and personnel working with the country’s security agencies, totalling 12,500.
Chipungu made the assurance at Mitundu Police Unit, Traditional Authority Chiseka in Lilongwe during the official handover of six newly constructed houses out of an expected 18 at the facility.
According to Chipungu, the Democratic Progressive Party-led administration has a flagship project under which 12,500 housing units will be constructed for men and women in uniform, namely: the Malawi Defence Force, Malawi Police Service, Malawi Prison Service and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services.
While expressing satisfaction with the progress made so far, Chipungu acknowledged that the project has faced delays due to late payments and other logistical challenges.
Taking his turn, Minister of Homeland Security, Peter Mukhito, described the houses as a turning point in improving officers’ welfare, boosting morale, and enhancing service delivery.
Mukhito has since urged officers to remain disciplined, professional, and non-partisan, while rejecting corruption and serving with integrity.
He also advised beneficiaries to take good care of the houses, describing them as a symbol of trust and the government’s commitment to improving the security sector.
