Department of Fisheries says it is determined to increase fish production in Malawi by cage aquaculture initiatives.
The Department’s Deputy Director, John Rey Kandapo, said this after noting dwindling catches in Lake Malawi and other water bodies.
“The Department of Fisheries has registered a number of investors who are venturing into cage aquaculture. Some have already started culturing the fish in the Cages and have even harvested,” he stressed.
He added that the department also embraced the mega farm initiative, where it has secured funds for the establishment of a Mega cage farm in Lake Malawi in Mangochi District.
“Government intends to buy 100 fish cages that will be operated by potential investors,” Kandapo said.
The Deputy Director added that they have identified land at Kasinthula in Chikwawa where they intend to establish an aqua park for fish production.
“All these initiatives are being implemented to make sure that the fish supply on the market increases. This will ease the pressure being exerted on fisheries resources in our lakes,” He explained.
Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources’ Professor in the Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Science, Jeremiah Kang’ombe, described the move as a positive one.

“It is of great importance to social and economic development as it will help to increase fish production and enhance income,” Kang’ombe said.
Aquaculture production in Malawi 2063 falls under pillar number 1 which focuses on promoting sustainable agriculture and Fisheries to enhance food security and nutrition for Malawians.
Malawi produces approximately 80,000 tonnes of fish per year, according to Food and Agriculture Organisation website.
