Gangata sworn in as MP

By Charles Wahara

Minister of State Alfred Gangata has taken the oath as Member of Parliament for Lilongwe-Mtandire-Mtsiriza Constituency at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe.

Deputy Chief Justice Lovemore Chikopa presided over the event. He advised members of Parliament to serve the people of Malawi and uphold the Constitution and the integrity of the House.

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) declared Gangata as the elected MP for Lilongwe-Mtandire-Mtsiriza after determining the results using materials already in its custody, as directed by the High Court.

This follows a High Court ruling on November 10, 2025, which instructed MEC to identify the winner using the available polling records.

Gangata is also the Vice President for the Centre in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), and he expressed gratitude.

“I am short of words… thank heavens for the victory,” Gangata said.

Gangata’s swearing-in brings the total number of Members of Parliament to 224.
