First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika has urged delegates attending the 2026 Multiple District 412 Convention of Lions Clubs International to continue supporting underprivileged communities across the region.
She made the remarks in Salima District during the official opening of the convention.
The First Lady described the gathering as more than just a meeting, but a platform for humanitarian leaders to reflect on their impact, strengthen partnerships and renew their commitment to community development.
Madam Mutharika commended Lions and Leos for their work in health, environmental protection, youth empowerment, disaster response and humanitarian services across Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Botswana.
She specifically praised the organisation’s support during disasters such as the 2015 and 2019 floods and Cyclone Freddy, saying the interventions brought hope to affected communities in districts including Thyolo, Mulanje, Chikwawa, Nkhotakota and Karonga.
The First Lady also highlighted investments made through Lions Sight First Hospitals in Blantyre, Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu, as well as support for childhood cancer care at Kamuzu Central Hospital and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Speaking at the event, Past International Director Lion, Eli Chiti, applauded the First Lady for establishing the Beautify Malawi Trust (BEAM Trust), saying it reflects her commitment to uplifting vulnerable people.
More than 250 delegates from Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia are attending the convention.
