Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) will connect over 90, 000 new customers between March and June this year under the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP).
Acting Chief Public Relations Officer for ESCOM Peter Kanjere says the project aims to provide electricity to 180,000 households within a 500-meter radius of existing transformers in rural and urban areas.
“As of now, we have connected 90,550 new customers. We introduced an instalment payment option where customers can pay an initial fee of K17,475, easing the financial burden of the full connection cost,” Kanjere said.
The MEAP initiative has also introduced an initiative to cushion customers who cannot afford electricity wiring for their houses.
The project is funded by the World Bank to the tune of $71 million to increase electricity access for low-income households.
