President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has urged fresh Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) graduates (MUBAS) to choose a path of production over consumption, as the nation’s destiny depends on the choices its citizens make.
Dr Chakwera said this at MUBAS’ 2nd graduation ceremony held at its Chichiri Campus in Blantyre on Monday.
He said each individual has a choice to make between producing more than they consume or consuming more than they produce.
“The behaviour of a person is the only evidence of the choice that matters,” he said.
Chakwera noted that many citizens claim to believe in production, but their behaviour shows that their true priority is consumption.
He cited behaviours such as acting with entitlement, refusing to do things for oneself, waiting for handouts, and spending money recklessly instead of investing it.
The President encouraged the graduates to adopt a different mindset, one that prioritises production and entrepreneurship.
“My expectation is that the time you have spent at this university has taught you that this religion of consumption is not your path,” he said.
Chakwera also outlined behaviours that demonstrate a commitment to production, including researching lucrative areas of production, creating innovative solutions, forging partnerships, and setting goals to build something that will outlast them.
The President expressed pride in MUBAS’s legacy of producing graduates with a production-oriented mindset and announced that his government will invest in the mass production of agricultural machinery made by the university’s students.
