President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has called on Malawians to support one another generously while upholding the dignity of every individual, regardless of their status.
He made the remarks in Lilongwe during the official launch of the 2025 Malawi Red Cross Flag Week, where he personally donated K2 million.
Dr Chakwera, who is also the patron of the Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS), emphasised the importance of treating people with respect across all walks of life. He said such actions require deliberate effort, generosity, and sacrifice.
“Acts of generosity should never undermine the dignity of those we seek to support,” he said, urging both the public and the private sector to contribute to the success of the Flag Week.
Minister of Health, Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda, commended MRCS as a crucial partner in managing health emergencies in Malawi, including outbreaks of cholera and polio. She encouraged Malawians to join the resource mobilisation campaign.
In his remarks, MRCS President Innocent Majiya disclosed that the organisation has so far assisted 100,000 people affected by disasters with cash support amounting to K4 billion. He thanked Malawians, donor partners, and President Chakwera for their continued support, including annual government subventions and the construction of emergency operations centres.
This year, the Malawi Red Cross Society aims to raise K200 million during the Flag Week, which is being commemorated under the theme “On the Side of Humanity.”
