Breast Cancer Care Foundation has called for added awareness against the disease to save lives.
The Foundation’s Executive Director, Tabitha Kalaitzis, made the call in Blantyre during a street carnival to raise awareness about the disease.
“Women must know how to check their breasts every month and seek medical attention,” she said.
Findings by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) show that fewer than 10 percent of breast cancer patients in Malawi survive the disease beyond 18 months from the time of diagnosis.
WHO records show that the disease, which entails abnormal breast cells leading to the formation of tumours, globally killed 685 women in 2020.
