Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Patricia Wiskes, says Malawians should not panic due to the El-Niño weather conditions that may be experienced from this year to the next.
Wiskes said this during the release of the 2026-27 National Rainfall Forecast in Lilongwe on Wednesday.
According to the forecast, the southern part of Malawi will experience below-to-normal rainfall, the central part will be normal to below normal rainfall pattern that are characterised by dry spells and heat conditions.
Meanwhile, the northern part will have normal to above normal rains.
Nonetheless, the minister said the forecast should not scare Malawians but rather warn them to be prepared and act to mitigate the effects of such conditions.
Therefore, she said there is a need to translate the forecast into a coordinated action.
Deputy British High Commissioner to Malawi, Ben Nicholson, said the United Kingdom’s government has injected $3 million for communities to avoid the negative effects of the El-Niño.
