The Indian community in Malawi Saturday evening gathered to celebrate India’s 80th independence anniversary with a dinner at the Indian Sports Club in Lilongwe
Speaking at the event, Indian High Commissioner to Malawi, Amararam Gujar, hailed the strong ties between the two nations, describing Malawi as an important partner in development. He said India would continue to support Malawi in areas such as health, education and trade to ensure shared prosperity.
“Over the years India has supported Malawi in education, political collaboration and trade. We want Malawi to continue exporting products like pigeon peas to India, especially in processed form, if the country is to gain more benefits,” Gujar said.
He noted that pigeon peas have become a game‑changer for Malawi’s economy, emerging as the country’s second‑highest foreign exchange earner after tobacco. Gujarat added that India would continue to rally behind the support offered by the Malawi government.
Currently, more than 17,000 Indians are living in Malawi. Gujarat emphasised that India has long considered Malawi an important partner in development and said the two countries would continue to grow together.
Independence Day in India is observed every year on 15 August as a national holiday, marking the country’s liberation from British rule in 1947.
