A Belgian medical student, Anais Hublet from Maastricht University, has launched a free cervical cancer screening exercise targeting women in eight health facilities under the Karonga Diocese from June 1 to 19.
Speaking during the launch on Monday in Karonga District, Hublet urged women aged 15 to 65 years to take advantage of the programme.
She said cervical cancer remains one of the leading causes of death among women in Malawi due to late diagnosis and costly treatment.

Hublet said she initiated the exercise after learning about the number of cervical cancer cases in Malawi and partnered with Lusubilo Community Care of the Karonga Diocese.
The programme is being funded through a € 2,000 grant from Belgian gynaecologists under CRGLFB.
One of the beneficiaries, Elise Msiska of Mwambuli Village, commended the move and called for increased awareness on cervical cancer.
The screening is taking place at Hope Clinic, Lupembe, Mwenilondo, St Cynthia, St Clara, Kaseye, St Theresa Health Centre and St Annes Community Hospital.
