NBS Bank plc has distanced itself from the controversy surrounding the trophy presentation incident at the 2026 NBS Charity Shield held at Bingu National Stadium, emphasising that it played no role in the events that unfolded.
In a statement released for immediate publication, the bank acknowledged concerns raised by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and expressed regret over the situation.
“We regret the incident and the distress caused to His Worship the Mayor of Lilongwe, Peter Banda, and we extend our respect to all offices and individuals affected,” reads part of the statement.
The bank, however, clarified that its involvement in the Charity Shield is limited to sponsorship and does not extend to event management or security operations.
“NBS Bank’s role in the Charity Shield event is that of a sponsor. Event delivery, including programme coordination, protocol arrangements and security management, is undertaken by the organisers and relevant responsible authorities under FAM and FIFA guidelines,” the statement said.
It further emphasised that its staff were not involved in any actions linked to the incident.
“At no point were NBS Bank personnel involved in any security-related action, or in the removal or ejection of any individual from the stage or procession area,” the bank added.
NBS Bank reiterated its commitment to maintaining strong institutional relationships, particularly with the Lilongwe City Council, noting that it values the partnership and is dedicated to strengthening it.
The bank also disclosed that it is engaging the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and other stakeholders to establish a clear understanding of what transpired, while avoiding speculation.
“We will rely on verified facts as confirmed through the relevant institutional engagements and will avoid speculation while this process is ongoing,” the statement reads.
Despite the controversy, NBS Bank underscored the importance of the Charity Shield as a unifying national event that promotes sporting excellence and social impact.
“The event remains an important national sporting platform intended to promote unity, social impact and sporting excellence, underpinned by respect and orderly conduct,” the statement said.
The bank also announced that this year’s Charity Shield will support the Green Girls Boarding Initiative, a project being implemented in partnership with Plan International Malawi at Emvuyeni Community Day Secondary School in Mzimba.
