Govt. reaffirms no Malawian will die of hunger

Vice President Dr Jane Ansah has reiterated that the government remains committed to ensuring that no Malawian dies of hunger.

Dr Ansah made the remarks at Kavitowe Primary School Ground in Mzimba District, where she presided over the launch of the Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme for the Northern Region.

She advised district councils and officials responsible for compiling beneficiary lists to ensure the inclusion of people with disabilities, child-headed households, and the elderly, among others.

The programme’s beneficiaries expressed joy after receiving maize and cash support, with many thanking President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for what they described as a fatherly gesture.

World Food Programme (WFP) Country Representative, Hyoung-Joon Lim, emphasised the need for strong collaboration among stakeholders to end hunger in Malawi.

He added that WFP aims to support 1.9 million people during this lean season.

Inkosi Ya Makhosi M’mbelwa V of Mzimba urged beneficiaries to use the maize and money for their intended purpose.

The Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme, implemented under the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), follows A Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee report, which indicated that at least four million Malawians across all districts are food insecure.

President Mutharika has since extended the state of disaster declaration to all 28 districts of the country.
