Phwezi Girls Class of 1996 donates to children’s cancer ward

Alumni from Phwezi Girls Secondary School’s Class of 1996 Central Region Chapter have reached out to patients at Kamuzu Central Hospital’s Children’s Cancer Ward in Lilongwe.

The group donated various essential items, including soap, body lotion, sugar and soya pieces, to help ease the children’s day-to-day challenges.

Speaking during the presentation, the chapter’s chairperson, Tendai Kalea Chirwa, said the gesture was part of their ongoing charitable efforts to support the less privileged.

“As a group, we’ve embarked on outreach activities to assist those in need, and we felt the children battling cancer were most deserving of our support,” said Chirwa.

“Phwezi Girls Secondary School played a big role in shaping who we are today. This is our way of giving back, and we hope to extend similar donations to schools and orphanages in future,”  added Chirwa.

Kamuzu Central Hospital Chaplain, Father Joseph Ngwendere, expressed gratitude for the timely donation, saying many children admitted to the ward come from distant areas and often struggle to meet their basic needs.

The Central Region Chapter of the Phwezi Girls Class of 1996 comprises around 30 members, while the wider association has about 100 members across Malawi and abroad.

Formed to reconnect former classmates, the association focuses on networking, mutual support and community service through charitable initiatives.
