Malawi Union of Savings and Credit Cooperatives (MUSCCO) says Malawi has the potential of boosting its economy by focusing on manufacturing products from locally available resources.
MUSCCO Chief Executive Officer made the remarks at Chiutsa in Dedza when farmers showcased products to representatives of MUSSCO and We Effect, a Swedish international development organisation.
Mtera Kadauma, a dairy farmer, said farmers are failing to compete on the market as most of their products are not certified which is hindering growth of their agro businesses.
Anna Tibblin, ths Secretary General for We Effect, commended the efforts of smallholder farmers in spearheading financial independence amidst the economic challenges.
Supported by MUSCCO and We Effect, farmers are producing various items such cooking oil, mbeya organic fertilizer, soap, yoghurt and other products using farm produce and other locally available resources.
Meanwhile, MUSSCO has advised the farmers to get certification from the Malawi Bureau of Standards to enhance growth of their businesses.
