Chiradzulu making headway in PMTCT

Chiradzulu District Health Office says it has made significant progress in the prevention of Mother-To-Child-Transmission (PMTCT) of HIV.

Spokesperson for the Health Office, Dalitso Gulani, said there are a number of interventions that have been employed to achieve this.

For instance, Gulani said over 98% of HIV positive pregnant women are on Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART), adding there is an improved coverage on Early Infant Diagnosis (EID).

He said all these efforts tend to reduce chances of HIV transmission from mothers to their unborn babies and infants.

Apart from this, Gulani said the Health Office integrated PMTCT services into antenatal and under-five clinics for better outcomes.

Monica Yesaya, who comes from Senior Chief Likoswe, hailed PMTCT by testifying that she had delivered two babies free of HIV despite her positive sero-status.

Yesaya advised that it is important to adhere to medical counselling in order to have HIV negative babies.

District Manager of Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation, Licy Khongonyowa, said PMTCT managing is registering successes in Chiradzulu District.

Khongonyowa said for example, from April 2023 to June 2025, uptake of ART in antenatal clinics was at 99 percent among others, due to good testing coverage and cooperation of HIV positive pregnant mothers.
