Malawi is strengthening its position in the global conversation on the ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as Minister of Higher Education Jessie Kabwila, participates in the 3rd UNESCO Global Forum on the Ethics of AI, taking place from 24 to 27 June 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The high-level forum is expected to shape global policies and foster partnerships that will guide Malawi’s approach to AI development and governance ensuring that emerging technologies align with the country’s values, promote inclusive innovation, and support sustainable national development.
Kabwila is accompanied by the Director of Science, Technology and Innovation in the Ministry of Higher Education, Associate Professor Chomora Mikeka. According to Kabwila,the trip is fully funded by UNESCO.
The forum brings together global leaders, policymakers, scholars, and innovators to engage in critical dialogue on the ethical governance and responsible deployment of AI technologies. Malawi’s participation shows the country’s commitment to promoting digital transformation through science, technology and innovation anchored in ethical standards.
Meanwhile, a key milestone in the same area is being marked with the validation of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP).
The process is being undertaken in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and aims to consolidate Malawi’s strategic framework for science-led development.
The validation meeting is co-chaired by UNDP Resident Representative Ms Fenella Frost and the Secretary for Higher Education, Levis Keliyasi Eneya. The two are leading the exercise through the National Science, Technology and Innovation Technical Working Group (NSTI-TWG), which comprises national experts and stakeholders from various sectors.
Together, these parallel efforts at global and national levels demonstrate Malawi’s resolve to harness the power of AI and technology responsibly and inclusively for the benefit of its people and future generations.
