Finance Ministry dismisses circulating fake document

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has distanced itself from a document circulating on social media which claims the government intends to introduce new economic measures after the 2025 general elections.

The statement, signed by Secretary to the Treasury Hetherwick Njati, describes the document as “false” and urges the public to disregard it.

“The Ministry would like to categorically refute the said document. The general public is therefore advised to disregard the document and the purported false plans,” says Njati.

He adds that the government is already implementing macroeconomic stabilisation measures as outlined in the 2025/26 National Budget.

According to the ministry, the document is produced by “disgruntled people working towards damaging government image.”

Njati further appeals to Malawians to exercise caution when confronted with documents purporting to carry government insignia.

“We are calling on all Malawians to verify on all documents bearing Government insignia to avoid being misled,” he urges.

The ministry concludes by noting that the false document appears to be part of a wider campaign of disinformation being spread by individuals intent on misleading the public during this electoral period.
