Chakwera concedes defeat, congratulates Mutharika

Outgoing President, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, has conceded defeat in the recently-held September 16 General Election.

He has since congratulated president elect, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.

Dr Chakwera says he accepts results of the elections that the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has released and will accept  the official results yet to be announced.

Chakwera says although the outcome is disappointing to many of those who supported his political career, he is grateful for the trust and support he has received throughout his candidacy.

Dr Chakwera says he will ensure there is peaceful transfer of power and that it happens in a seamless manner that safeguards peace and the will of Malawians.

The president has thanked Malawians for their conduct of ensuring the election happens in a peaceful, orderly and lawful manner.

He has therefore called on Malawians to render the support they have rendered to him to president-elect, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika.
