Communities in Nkhata Bay District have pointed out that the Social Cash Transfer Programme implemented by the government has transformed their lives.

In an interview on Monday, one of the beneficiaries, Sellah Mvula from Chikondo Village in the area of Traditional Authority M’bwana, said she used the money to venture into a small scale business.

“It was had for me to feed my family. When I started receiving K48 000 from the programme in 2022, I invested it in a business of selling rice and the business is growing everyday,” she said.

Mvula said from the business profits, she has managed to connect tap water to her home from the gravity fed water system which is in the area.

Another beneficiary, Janny Nkhoma from Midoyi Village in the same area, said she has managed to connect electricity to her house, which has impacted positively on the performance of her children at school.

NKhata Bay District Principal Social Welfare Officer responsible for Social Cash Transfer Programme, Wisdom Mwafulirwa, said they will not relent in advising beneficiaries to venture into income generating activities, which is in line with the programme’s goals of alleviating poverty.

Social Cash Transfer is one of the social protection programmes which the government of Malawi is implementing across the country with financial support from Multi-Donor Trust Fund including World Bank and 6,475 households are benefitting from the programme in Nkhata Bay.
