MACODA launch disability act booklet

Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (MACODA) has introduced a booklet on Persons with Disabilities Act, which was amended last year.

MACODA Executive Director, George Chiusiwa, said the book has potential to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities in Malawi.

Speaking during a meeting where stakeholders were validating the booklet, Chiusiwa said the booklet will simplify contents of the new legislative document, which in turn will ensure that rights of persons with disability are safeguarded.

He added that key stakeholders packaged the booklet in an easy-to-read version so that persons with disabilities, most of whom reside in rural areas, should have steady access to information regarding the law.

Senior Labour Officer in the Ministry of Labour, Simeon Chiutsi, said the booklet is very important because it is clarifying a lot of disability-related affairs.

US Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs helped crafting the book with Meridian International Centre to, among others, simplify legal language and promote awareness and understanding of the rights of people with disabilities.
