Likoma district to plant 50000 tree seedlings

Likoma District Council has unveiled plans to plant 50,000 tree seedlings in the district during the 2024/2025 forestry season.

Likoma District Forestry Officer (DFO), Grant Kumwenda, made the remarks on Friday during the tree planting launch in Chilongole Village under the theme “Restore Forests Land to Secure Food Production” with support from Opportunity International.

“We are targeting almost 33.9 hectares because of the potion of land we have, they are small areas and for Chizumulu its about 24.9 hectares,” Kumwenda said.

Likoma District Vice Council Chairperson, Earnest Gulu Banda, said everyone has a responsibility to take part in the exercise.

“We need to take into account that tree planting is very important because it helps in reducing disasters in the country and at district level, this also helps in restoring forest land use for food production,” said Gulu.

Acting Senior Chief Mkumpha III thanked the Forestry Department for planting the tree seedlings in time saying that this will help the tree seedlings to grow well adding that planting of the trees is vital as it helps in combating environmental challenges posed by climate change.

Vice President, Dr Michael Usi, officially launched the 2024/2025 National Forestry Season on 17 December, 2024 in Chitipa District.
