Insufficient funding crippling Chess popularity — CHESSAM

The Chess Association of Malawi (CHESSAM) says it is struggling to popularise chess in remote and rural areas due to insufficient funding.

Francisco Mwangupuli, CHESSAM’s spokesperson, says this is despite the introduction of the National Schools Chess Championship.

The association plans to host the National Chess Championship from 29 March to 1 April 2024 in Lilongwe.

This tournament, which will feature 35 players, aims to select the best players to represent the national team, which will participate in the 45th World Chess Olympiad in Hungary.
