Presidential Advisor on Non-Governmental Organisations Martha Kwataine on Thursday met Kabaza operators in Lilongwe following a public outcry on road accidents involving motorcycles.

Speaking during the interface, Kwataine bemoaned high accidents being recorded on the roads of Malawi and advised the operators to be careful and follow all the rules to protect themselves and their clients.

Kwataine said the accidents have a negative impact on the economy, adding that President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is concerned with the deaths and high number of accidents.

She has since urged stakeholders to introduce rewards to operators who are exemplary and do not get involved in an accident for a certain period.

Kabaza Association of Malawi President, Joseph Petulo, commended Dr Chakwera for the good roads which have helped to reduce accidents.

Petulo also commended Kwataine for coming up with the initiative to address the Kabaza stakeholders.

Petulo pledged to work with the government as one way of its efforts to reduce accidents. He beamoned accidents happening on the roads of Malawi which he said are a result of driving unregistered motorcycles, uninsured motorcycles and overloading.

Road Safety Alert Foundation (ROSAF) Communications Officer, Thokozani Chenjezi, commended President Chakwera, for the construction of good roads in the country which has helped in reducing accidents.

“We are so grateful to the current administration led by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera. The good road designs have helped to reduce road accidents especially those involving Kabaza operators,” said Chenjezi.

Kabaza Association was registered in 2014 and seeks to enhance the welfare of Kabaza operators in Malawi.
