Around 40 football coaches have successfully completed their training and are set to receive FAM D Coaching Licence in Mzuzu.
Boston Nkhoma, Chief Executive Officer for Mzuzu Education District, said the training targeted sports teachers and other non-teaching football personnel to acquire prerequisite qualifications that will enable them to coach in schools and unearth hidden football talent.
The 40 participants are sports teachers and other football enthusiasts who have been coaching small teams in the city and surrounding areas without licences.
“The coaches have been trained to understand the art of imparting football skills to young players, instilling discipline, developing game plans, and motivating players,” said Nkhoma.
FAM Second Vice President, Lameck Khonje, said the training aligns with their vision of ensuring that football in Malawi is completely transformed.
One of the participants, Wongani Nyasulu, believes the training is vital because not all students will pursue tertiary education and find white-collar jobs with some destined to become football stars.
Mzuzu Education District, in conjunction with the district sports office, is implementing the coaches’ training course to increase the number of qualified coaches in Mzuzu.
Mzuzu District Sports Officer, Lydia Tambala, pointed out that the city currently has only three qualified coaches across all schools, making it challenging to ensure fair play during tournaments like the Mayor’s Trophy.
