Traditional leaders in Salima have expressed gratitude to President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, applauding his dedication to fulfilling promises and advancing development in the district.
The chiefs made the remarks during a whistlestop tour in Salima, where Dr Chakwera highlighted ongoing projects, such as the rehabilitation of the Salima-Nkhotakota Road.
Senior Chief Khombedza, speaking to the crowd, praised Dr Chakwera’s approach to prioritising the needs of Malawians, saying, “Dr Chakwera has shown that he puts development at the forefront. We are delighted with the projects underway and look forward to more positive changes in our community.”
He then urged the government to sustain these efforts and address the food shortages affecting the district.
Responding to the chiefs’ remarks, President Chakwera reassured the crowd that his administration remains committed to improving the nation’s infrastructure and social services.
“We are focused on building new hospitals, schools, and roads across the country,” he affirmed.
The President acknowledged the hardships caused by climate-related challenges, which have impacted food security in the district.
“The government is distributing relief food to communities in need, and we will continue this support throughout the lean season,” he added.
Additionally, President Chakwera announced measures to stimulate economic growth in the rural areas.
“Through the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF), we will ensure that young people and entrepreneurs have access to loans to start businesses and create employment,” he explained.
He further called on relevant ministries and departments to enhance efforts in supporting vulnerable Malawians during this lean season.
“We are urging the Ministries of Agriculture, Social Welfare, and Finance, among others, to work together to increase beneficiaries for affordable farming inputs, social cash transfer, and relief food,” said Dr Chakwera.
The President’s tour of Salima commenced at Siyasiya and included stops in Mtakataka, Mlamba, and the Headquarters of Senior Chief Maganga, where he interacted with the people.
Concluding the whistle-stop at Kaphatenga, Dr Chakwera, encouraged Malawians to register in large numbers for the upcoming General Election in September 2025, emphasizing the importance of civic engagement in shaping the nation’s future.
The visit has bolstered the morale of Salima’s leaders and residents, who expressed hope that the development initiatives will continue to progress steadily under Dr Chakwera’s leadership.
