Oya bids farewell to Malawi

‎Japan’s Ambassador to Malawi, Yoichi Oya, has bid farewell after completing his three-year diplomatic mission, marking the end of a tenure he described as “deeply meaningful and memorable.”

Oya, who served from January 2023 to January 2026, is retiring from diplomatic service.

‎Speaking to Journalists on Wednesday at his residence, Ambassador Oya expressed profound gratitude to Malawians for what he called exceptional hospitality and warmth throughout his stay.

“Malawi welcomed me with love, and I leave with unforgettable memories,” he said.

‎Among the experiences that touched him most, Oya highlighted his visit to Dzaleka Refugee Camp, where he witnessed the struggles of asylum seekers.

He noted that the humanitarian situation at the camp remains one of the pressing issues Malawi continues to face.

‎Throughout his tenure, Oya championed cooperation in health, agriculture, education and humanitarian support, strengthening ties between Lilongwe and Tokyo.

‎As he exits the diplomatic stage, the outgoing ambassador also delivered a message to Malawi’s youth, urging them to embrace a mindset shift and take bold steps toward transforming the nation’s economy.

He described young people as the “primary drivers of Malawi’s future,” encouraging them to seize opportunities in innovation, skills development and entrepreneurship.

‎Ambassador Oya leaves Malawi with a legacy of partnership and mutual respect, closing a chapter defined by development cooperation, cultural exchange and shared aspirations for a better future.
