Media, aid agencies hoping to enhance partnerships

Media professionals in the country are hoping for better collaboration with humanitarian organisations as they work towards highlighting the impact of the social transformation programmes by the organisations.

Executive Director of the Malawi Institute of Journalism, Levi Phelani, said this during a media executive engagement meeting in Blantyre, organised through the US Agency for International Development (USAID) partnerships incubator, which brought together media executives and organisations such as Find Your Feet (FYF), Churches and Action Relief and Development (CARD), and the Malawi Red Cross Society.

Phelani emphasised the critical role that journalists play in highlighting development initiatives.

Melton Luhanga, Executive Director of CARD, stated that such meetings would help publicise ongoing projects.

“We have realised that we have many stories to tell about the impactful activities we are implementing in the field, but they are not being shared,” Luhanga said.

Since President Lazarus Chakwera declared a State of Disaster in 23 districts due to the effects of El Nino, humanitarian agencies have been calling for support to address food shortages in the affected areas.
