ITU, MACRA discuss internet affordability

Minister of Information says he is optimistic that the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) regional workshop on cost models for data services will help come up with data pricing methodologies for countries like Malawi to manage their data costs and ensure internet is being used meaningfully.

Kunkuyu has said this in Lilongwe during the opening of a two-day international workshop organised by MACRA and ITU.

He says this will also afford delegates an opportunity to look into the interests of consumers, regulators and service providers.

MACRA Director General Daud Suleman says the workshop will help them find means to address issues of internet connectivity for local consumers.

According to MACRA, Malawi has 14 million people on mobile phones but slightly over a million have internet connectivity.
