Chairperson of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi, Golden Matonga, has challenged journalists at Bwaila Media Club’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Salima to use their clubs as centres for debate, learning, and shaping national discourse, while actively contributing to the country’s development.
“Media clubs should serve as think tanks acting as homes of intellectual debate where we deliberate the future of our fraternity, provide space for socialising, and collectively discuss issues that confront the industry,” said Matonga whilst emphasising the importance of moving beyond networking.
He reaffirmed MISA Malawi’s commitment to defending media freedom and the right to information under Section 36 of the Constitution, while raising concerns over political interference in state media.
“We have already submitted proposed amendments to the Communications Act to both the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and Parliament, aimed at insulating public institutions like Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) from undue political influence,” added Matonga.
Matonga also praised BMC for its leadership, growth, and welfare initiatives, linking the club’s development to the wider media sector. He announced plans to establish a School of Journalism in partnership with DW Akademie to strengthen professionalism and skills among journalists.

BMC Chairperson, Felix Washon, outlined the club’s focus on members’ welfare, including medical and funeral cover, while promoting collaboration and mentorship.
“The club intends to look, among others, into the welfare of its members with emphasis on ensuring that they are on medical cover,” said Washon.
He further pointed to the club’s community engagement, including tree planting, donations, and mentoring young learners, underlining that journalists are active participants in national development.
The AGM brought together media practitioners from the Central Region, providing a platform to discuss national issues, build professional networks, and foster personal and professional growth.
