Govt geared to increase electricity access

Parliament is optimistic that Capital Hill will meet its target of increasing electricity access for Malawians by 50% by 2030 through the Malawi Electricity Access Project (MEAP).

Chairperson for the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change, Werani Chilenga, made the remarks during a visit to Mzuzu, where communities are benefitting from the project.

Chilenga, who is also a Member of Parliament for Chitipa South, expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress.

He acknowledged resource challenges but commended ESCOM for its efforts to improve electricity access.

Commenting on the project timeline, Chief Operations Officer at ESCOM, Maxwell Mulimakwenda, said they are doing their best to complete it in time.

The Malawi Electricity Access Project is funded by the World Bank, and as of September 2024, the utilisation of disbursed funds stood at 76.4%.
