TAML, Solidalidad partner to boost women’s roles in tea sector

Tea Association of Malawi (TAML) has stressed the importance of enhancing knowledge among women workers in the tea industry, who comprise 65% of the workforce.

Gender Coordinator for TAML, Maria Dowa Mwaya, said this on Friday in Thyolo during a training for women supervisory positions in the industry.

“We expect to improve assertiveness, self-empowerment, critical thinking and promote gender equality among other things, for the benefit of all female workers in the industry,” Dowa said.

TAML Chief Executive Officer, Tonda Chinangwa, echoed similar sentiments.

“As an industry that has a lot of women in its workforce, the training will help ensure that decisions are being made considerate of peculiar needs of both genders,” Chinangwa said.

The drill is in conjunction with Solidalidad, an International NGO that focuses on producers support, supply chains and market development.
