Higher Education Students’ Loans and Grants Board (HESLGB) has awarded grants to 26 outstanding students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), all excelling in various science programmes with distinctions in their first year.
Speaking during the inaugural grants award ceremony in Blantyre, Minister of Education, Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima hailed the loans and grants board for fulfilling one of its mandates, which is to award grants to deserving students.
HESLGB board member, Henry Chingaipe said while the grants were originally intended to begin in 2015, challenges delayed their disbursement.
He further said the programme will initially target students from public universities, with plans to extend to private universities after this pilot phase.
The grants will be awarded annually, but students need to maintain distinction status to continue receiving this prestigious privilege.
