European Union (EU) has announced a 600 million Euros (about K1.1 trillion) energy package for Malawi to help strengthen Malawi’s energy sector.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lilongwe, EU Ambassador to Malawi, Lune Skinnebach, said the package is aligned with EU Global Gateway and aims to boost inclusive and sustainable economic growth for jobs creation.
According to Skinnebach, the EU ernegy package for Malawi will also improve the energy sector by enhancing its governance and directly improving access to energy.
Minister of Energy Ibrahim Matola commended the EU for the support.
He said the package will support Mpatamanga Hydro Power Station in generating 361 Megawatts and support the private sector in developing solar power plants and assist EGENCO and ESCOM in energy generation, distribution and transmission.
The EU energy package for Malawi has come following the Malawi – EU first Investment forum and the Africa Energy summit held in Tanzania last month.
